Advanced Cancer Treatments

Latest cancer technologies

MHL focuses instead on a number of technologies which are not yet widely available throughout the world and we help you to apply to the leading centres which offer these.
We do not attempt to give an overview of all treatments available for specific types of cancer, since many of these are widely known and are available in any good cancer hospital.
Advanced cancer treatments featured include ion beam therapy, proton therapy, CyberKnife radiosurgery, high or low dose rate brachytherapy, intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) and minimally invasive 'robotic' surgery.
All cancer enquiries are welcome and we provide additional information on the following main areas.
Brain or spine tumours
Breast cancer
Eye cancer (uveal melanoma)
Liver cancer
Lung cancer
Pancreatic cancer
Prostate cancer
Ion beam therapy is the latest addition to the MHL enquiry service

Surgery is often the preferred approach, where it is possible. This may be 'tradional' open surgery or minimally invasive, by laparoscopic techniques.
For some types of cancer such as prostate cancer, it may be possible to use image-guided 'robotic' surgery, such as the da VinciĀ® system.

Da Vinci robotic surgery

The word 'robotic' is commonly used, but 'telemanipulation' is more accurate.
The system displays internal images, giving the surgeon a three-dimensional view at up to ten times magnification.
It then relays the surgeon's hand movements to the instruments, that have been inserted through small incisions in the abdomen.
A tremor filter suppresses the trembling of the human hand and together these provide a high degree of precision.
The advantages are less pain, quicker mobility, shorter rehabilitation and minimal scar formation.

Cancer treatments

There have been many advances in radio-oncology, making treatments shorter and more accurate and reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
Radiotherapy is widely available and has improved over the years, but inevitably surrounding organs get irradiated as well.
Several other, more accurate treatments are now available which offer great advantages over conventional radiotherapy.

Proton beam therapy
CyberKnife radiosurgery

Medical Oncology, Immunotherapy and Haematology

Depending upon the age and condition of the patient, not all cancers need to be treated immediately. Treatment may be avoided or delayed by the use of hormomal therapy.
Drug based therapies may also be used to attack the tumour(s), either as a stand-alone treatment or as a prelude to radiotherapy or radiosurgery. New drugs are being developed continuously in order to find more effective treatments with fewer unwanted side-effects.
New drugs are being developed continuously, particularly at university hospitals, in order to find more effective and better targeted treatments, with fewer unwanted side-effects.
Leading treatment centres often have clinical trials of drugs that are not generally available elsewhere or they may be able to offer drugs that are not available in your own country.
