Deceased donor lung transplants
Availability is often restricted to nationals of the country where the hospital is located or to fixed regions.
Live donor lung transplants
Live donor lung transplants can be offered to suitable patients regardless of nationality.
Because the lungs are protected by the rib cage, gaining access for surgery can be difficult and can require large incisions.
Whilst robotically assisted surgery is becoming more widely available for other organs, e.g. the prostate, comparatively few surgeons are skilled at robotic surgery for the lungs.
In this the surgeon works remotely through instruments inserted through very small incisions and great skill is required in fine manipulation in order to achieve the best results.
One expert in the field characterised robotically assisted lung surgery as 'transferring the pain from the patient to the surgeon'!
MHL can introduce patients to specialist surgeons who are highly experienced in robotically-assisted lung surgery.
MHL can introduce patients to university hospitals in Germany or the USA which specialise in lung diseases, including asthma, bronchial carcinoma, chronic bronchitis, COPD, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis and tuberculosis.
Live donor lung transplants are now possible, where two suitable donors each contribute half of one lung. This is still a very rare procedure but we can introduce patients to a major university hospital in Germany which offers this procedure.

Note: depending upon where the tumour is exactly in the lung, CyberKnife radiosurgery can sometimes be offered without having to implant small metal markers (fiducials) and allowing these to settle.
Fiducials allow special software to track the tumour as you breathe, for greater accuracy of treatments. Whilst for many treatments the placement of fiducials is comparatively simple, for lung cancer it can be trickier.

Lung Treatments and Surgery
We can suggest many different excellent hospitals in Europe and the USA for lung treatments, depending upon the area of treatment required.
We provide some information below on just a few, including da Vinci 'robotic' surgery (few centres offer this for lung surgery), cancer treatments, pneumology and transplants
Live donor lung transplant is very rare, but we work with a university hospital in Germany which can offer this for suitable patients and donors.

CyberKnife radiosurgery, proton beam therapy and the latest ion beam therapy at expert specialist centres in Europe and the USA.
Regrettably we have heard of at least two instances in other centres where the patient's lung has been punctured, so we recommend that for lung cancer especially you choose a CyberKnife centre which specialises in lung treatments.
